San Jose police arrested a man Tuesday on suspicion of murder in connection to a shooting on July 4.

The department’s Covert Response Unit arrested Pierre Franco Plascencia, 40, of San Jose following an investigation by homicide detectives, officials said in a statement released Wednesday. Authorities did not detail the specifics of the crime or how they centered on Plascencia as a suspect.

The arrest came less than a week after a man and a woman were hit with gunfire while driving, causing their vehicle to crash into the garage of a house and catch fire, police said. The man was killed and the woman was injured.

Officers were alerted to a report of gunfire and car crash at 4:49 a.m. on July 4, police said. The incident occurred in the 5900 block of Liska Lane.

Upon their arrival, officers found a man in the driver’s seat of the burning vehicle. With the assistance of San Jose firefighters, they extinguished the car and extricated the man, who had visible gunshot injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Police also found a woman who had escaped the burning car and was suffering from a gunshot wound. She was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

After his arrest, Plascencia was booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail on suspicion of murder. Jail records showed he was being held without bail and was set to be arraigned Thursday.
