RICHMOND – California Highway Patrol officers on Friday night arrested a driver who led them on a car chase from the East Bay to San Francisco, where he hit a police dog, and then back to the East Bay, according to a spokesman for the agency.
The pursuit started around 3:20 p.m. when a Contra Costa County sheriff’s deputy tried to stop a stolen Infiniti sedan on westbound Highway 4, said CHP Officer Andrew Barclay
Barclay said the driver did not pull over and the deputy pursued him to westbound Interstate 80, where the chase was handed off to a police helicopter. The copter then followed the driver through Richmond, Albany and Berkeley, and into San Francisco.
Ground units closed in on the Infiniti when it appeared to come to a stop on a city street.
A CHP officer believed the driver was going to run from the car and got his K9 out of the back of his cruiser. The driver, however, took off in the Infiniti and hit the dog, as well as several vehicles, Barclay said.
The K9 suffered minor to moderate injuries and was taken to a veterinarian for an evaluation.
The driver got onto the Bay Bridge heading east. At one point, ground units tried to stop him but he kept driving, Barclay said, adding that they backed off while the police helicopter continued to follow the car.
Barclay said the driver got out of the Infiniti at an apartment complex at 3909 Fleming Ave. in Richmond and ran into a unit. Officers cordoned off the area, and shortly after 9 p.m., the driver surrendered and was taken into custody without incident.
The driver likely will face charges of felony evasion, assault with a deadly weapon and possession of a stolen vehicle, Barclay said.
