Fremont Union High School District set to transition from at-large governing board elections.

Trustee area hearings

The Fremont Union High School District board recently passed a resolution signaling its intent to transition from at-large governing board elections to trustee area elections. The board is seeking community input on the development of the trustee area boundary map.

A “pre-map” public hearing was held on Aug. 22, and another is set for Tuesday, Sept. 19, at 6:15 p.m. at the regular district board meeting.  By law, the board will not be able to review or consider maps at this hearing but will take public input on how the boundaries should be drawn.

The board will then hold at least two more public hearings to review draft maps.

Updates on opportunities for public input, the process for developing the trustee area boundary map, dates of relevant hearings and the draft boundary maps themselves will be posted to www.fuhsd.org/trustee-areas.

American history essay contest

The Los Altos chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) is sponsoring an American history essay contest for students in grades 5-8 who reside in the chapter area, which includes Cupertino and Sunnyvale.

The theme for this year’s contest is “The Stars and Stripes Forever.” Students will imagine it is 1897 and they are newspaper reporters for the Philadelphia Times, writing articles about John Philip Sousa’s new march, first performed on May 14 of that year.

Three judges will select one winner at each grade level. The winners will be invited to read their work at the February 2024 meeting of Los Altos DAR. These essays will then go to the next level of the competition, with the winning essays there moving forward to compete at the state level.
