A woman was fatally shot in East Oakland Thursday night, the city's 83rd homicide of the year.

OAKLAND — A 31-year-old woman was fatally shot in East Oakland Thursday night, authorities said.

Her name has not yet been released. Police said she was an Oakland resident.

The shooting happened at about 11:51 p.m. Thursday outside in the 5100 block of East Eighth Street.

The woman was taken to a hospital where she died a few hours later Friday morning.

Police said the woman lived in another part of Oakland and it is not yet known why she was in the area where she was shot.

A motive for the killing is under investigation. No suspects have been arrested.

The killing is the 83rd homicide investigated by Oakland police this year. Last year at this time police had investigated 86 homicides in the city.
