OAKLAND — A 27-year-old man died Sunday morning after he was first hit by a stray bullet fired during a downtown shootout between other people and was then struck by a car, authorities said.
The man’s name has not yet been released. Police said he was an Oakland resident.
The deadly violence took place about 2:20 a.m. Sunday in the area of 14th and Webster streets.
Police said the man killed was walking in the area when a gun battle erupted between at least two people that resulted in multiple shots being fired.
The 27-year-old man was hit by a stray bullet, police said.
He was then hit by a car in the 300 block of 14th Street, authorities said. The driver of the car fled the scene on foot.
Passersby gave aid to the man before police and paramedics got to the scene. He was taken to a hospital where he later died, police said.
At least one parked vehicle and two buildings were also hit by the gunfire but no other injuries were reported.
The motive for the shootout is under investigation. No arrests have been made. Streets in the area were shut down for several hours while police investigated.
The death is the 85th homicide investigated by Oakland police this year. Last year at this time police had investigated 87 homicides in the city.

Separately, a non-fatal shooting Saturday night left a 19-year-old man wounded at least twice about 10:48 p.m. in the 2700 block of Garden Street in East Oakland.
The shooting prompted the activation of a gunshot detection system and several shell casings were recovered at the scene.
The man got his own transportation to a hospital. Police have not yet been able to interview the man to determine who shot him and why.
