OAKLAND — A 26-year-old man died after he was hit by gunshots deliberately fired into his East Oakland by someone from outside on Sunday night, authorities said.

The name of the man killed was not immediately released.

The shooting happened about 11 p.m. Sunday in the 7800 block of Arthur Street, a primarily residential area not far from Arroyo Viejo Park.

Police said the man was inside the home with at least a half dozen others, including some small children and adults.

Someone standing outside the building fired numerous shots into the home, with bullets going through walls of the residence.

The man was the only one hit by the gunfire. He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 12:10 a.m. Monday, authorities said.

Police were working to establish a motive for the shooting. No arrests were announced.

The killing is the 97th homicide investigated by Oakland police this year. Last year at this time police had investigated 99 homicides in the city.
