1-year-old California child with severe burns dies, man and woman arrested

Contra Costa Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested Rodeo residents Destiny Deboe, 22, and Tyshawn Haywood, 21, after responding to the 300 block of California Street in this unincorporated city about 8:50 p.m. Monday for a report of a drowning, sheriff’s office spokesperson Jimmy Lee said in an emailed statement.

Lee said the two also were arrested on suspicion of felony infliction of injury to a child.

Deputies and fire personnel responded to the scene and tried to save the toddler but were unsuccessful, Lee said. Authorities pronounced the toddler dead at the scene. They did not release the toddler’s identity.

Deboe and Haywood were in custody Tuesday night at the Martinez Detention Facility in lieu of $1.07 million bail, according to jail records.

Lee said the case remains under investigation. It is the sixth homicide investigated by the sheriff’s office this year.
