Serra, which will lose many players from this year's team to graduation, has loaded up its non-league schedule in 2024.

Serra isn’t waiting until next season’s Open Division state championship game to take another swing at one of Southern California’s two superpowers.

Nine days before playing Mater Dei-Santa Ana for this year’s Open state title, the San Mateo powerhouse announced on social media that it will play host to St. John Bosco-Bellflower on Sept. 14 to close out next year’s non-league schedule.

The Padres will open at Folsom on Aug. 30 and visit De La Salle on Sept. 6 before playing the Southern California team that rolled over Serra 45-0 in last year’s Open Division state championship game.

Serra won at Folsom and DLS last season and was unbeaten before getting overpowered by Bosco.

The Padres defeated Folsom and DLS again this season, both in San Mateo, on their way to another unbeaten season and a fourth consecutive championship in the Central Coast Section’s top division.

Mater Dei beat Bosco 35-7 in last week’s Southern Section Division I championship game to secure its spot against Serra.

The teams will play Dec. 9 at Saddleback College in Mission Viejo, just as they did in 2021 when Mater Dei beat the Padres 44-7 to capture the Open state championship.

Serra, a senior-heavy team, will be a significant underdog next week.
